PUBLIC NOTICE: IMPORTANCE OF STOPPING AT STOP SIGNS

The Quincy Police Department would like to remind all drivers of the critical importance of stopping at stop signs. Adhering to stop sign rules not only ensures your safety but also the safety of pedestrians and other motorists. Below are key guidelines for navigating stop signs, four-way stops, and intersections when traffic lights are out.

Why Stopping at Stop Signs is Important:

  • Legal Requirement: It is a legal obligation to come to a complete stop at all stop signs. Failure to do so can result in fines and points on your driving record.

  • Pedestrian Safety: Stopping allows you to check for pedestrians who may be crossing the street.

  • Orderly Traffic Flow: Stop signs regulate traffic flow, helping to prevent confusion and collisions at intersections.

Rules for Four-Way Stops:

  • First to Stop, First to Go: The first vehicle to reach the intersection and come to a complete stop has the right of way.

  • Yield to the Right: If two or more vehicles arrive at the same time, yield to the vehicle on your right.

  • Straight Before Turns: Vehicles going straight have the right of way over those making turns.

When the Traffic Light is Out:

  • Treat as a Four-Way Stop: When a traffic light is out or malfunctioning, treat the intersection as a four-way stop. Follow the same rules as mentioned above for four-way stops.

  • Be Cautious: Approach the intersection with caution, even if it appears to be clear. Other drivers may not be aware of the rules or may be distracted.

By following these guidelines, you contribute to the safety and efficiency of our roads. The Quincy Police Department is committed to ensuring the well-being of all community members, and we appreciate your cooperation in adhering to these important traffic rules.

Stay safe and drive responsibly!
